Enterprise in Conflict Areas

Ondernemen in ct

Millions of people in the world live in extreme poverty. In countries with weak administration, where lawlessness reigns and where governments fail to guarantee the safety of their citizens, that poverty comes paired with the ever-present scourge of the bullet. Moreover, poverty and economic inequality is not just a consequence of conflict, but a breeding ground for new tensions and escalations of violence. Poverty and violent conflict often go hand in hand.

It is in fact in conflict countries that investments in economic development, agriculture and micro financing are so critically important to breaking through this vicious circle and offering the prospect of income and employment. This is what Cordaid does. To ensure that this economic development benefits the broader population, in all its economic projects Cordaid systematically emphasises the importance of good administration, transparent financial management and fair access to markets and resources, as well as sustainable harvesting of natural resources.

In countries with a long conflict history, Cordaid seeks out ways to contribute to increased security, justice and advancement opportunities for the poor. Investments in basic facilities and economic activity are an important part of this, but these can only truly benefit the poor if the underlying causes of conflict and weak administration are dealt with. Cordaid has a long history of experience in both support of agricultural development and micro financing for the poor, and strengthening sound administration and peace-building in conflict areas.

Within the programme Entrepreneurship in Conflict Areas, these fields of expertise are brought together in an integrated approach to improve not only the economic situation of disadvantaged groups and families, but the resilience of communities and societies to facilitate peaceful conflict resolution. Many countries with weak administration and long-term conflicts also struggle with natural disasters and the effects of climate change. Strengthening the economic basis helps make people better capable of managing the risks.

Cordaid’s economic programmes in conflict areas are focused principally on development in the agricultural chain, building micro financing structures and lobbying for better economic policy to benefit the poor. These programmes are concentrated in four countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Sierra Leone and Sudan.
